Trex® Sustainable Decking Products

Today, consumers are increasingly choosing more sustainable products. Since our inception, Trex products have been designed with sustainability in mind. Using innovative recycling methods, we transform recycled plastic film and reclaimed wood into beautiful outdoor decking products. Learn more about how we source the recycled and reclaimed raw materials for our products below.

Sustainable by Design

Our composite decking is made primarily from a blend of 95% recycled and reclaimed raw materials, providing long-lasting quality and style.

Our 30-plus years of experience have helped us hone our supply chain and proprietary process for converting discarded plastic film and wood into more than the sum of its parts. The result? A high-performance, eco-friendly selection of unique products, available at scale.

Upcycling Recycled and Reclaimed Materials

Recycled Plastic

Millions of pounds of plastic go into landfills every day.[1] Our company partners with corporations, retail stores, consumers and others to proactively capture unwanted plastic film and upcycle it into beautiful Trex decking. In 2022, we diverted more than 330 million pounds of plastic film slated for landfill.

Reclaimed Wood

To produce our award-winning decking, we also use reclaimed wood, including wood dust, off cuttings, pallets and more. We partner with upstream and downstream wood product manufacturers such as lumberyards and sawmills to capture their waste. In 2022, we used more than 670 million pounds of reclaimed wood fiber in our products.

Product Circularity

As we seek new opportunities to be more circular and divert end-of-life Trex decking from landfills, we worked with a Minnesota-based construction firm to collect scrap Trex boards and cut-off ends to recycle back into our production. In 2022, this first-step effort reclaimed 13,000 pounds of scrap material that otherwise would have been landfilled.

Green Building

The recycled and reclaimed content of our products makes Trex decking and railing a preferred choice for green building designers, especially those seeking LEED certification. Use of our decking can add up to five points to a project on LEED rating assessments. In addition to LEED, our products also meet ICC-ES and California Green Building Standards.
